Gallienus Zoo

Gallienus 253-268

Gellienus was made Caesar at 40 when Valerian his father became Emperor in 253, and declared Emperor himself a month later.  The Empire was split, with Valerian responsible for the East, and Gallienus for the West.  After Valerian was captured by the Sassanians, Gallienus ruled on his own.

One group of coins issued under Gallienus became known later as his Zoo Series, depicting a variety of animals, some real and some imaginary, with groups of animals honouring one of nine Roman deities.
